[ARCHIVED] Campbell County Department of Public Safety Encourages Citizens to Be Prepared in

News Flash - Tropical Storm Debby

RUSTBURG, VA - As Tropical Storm Debby is anticipated to move into our area, emergency staff want to ensure that our community is informed and ready to stay safe.

Our department remains in close contact with the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to monitor storm movement, so we can update the public on any areas of concern.  At the moment, heavy rain is expected which could cause some flooding in lower-lying areas.

Here are a few tips that we’d like to share to help our community be ‘Storm-Ready’.

Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates from trusted sources, such as the National Weather Service, local news stations, and official community channels. Be aware of any warnings or advisories issued.

Be prepared: Prepare an emergency kit (if you haven’t already) that includes:

     •Non-perishable food and water (enough for at least 72 hours)

     •Flashlights and extra batteries

     •First aid supplies

     •Important documents (e.g., identification, insurance papers, medical records) stored in a waterproof container

     •Medications and personal hygiene items

     •A battery-powered or hand-crank radio

Secure Your Property: If you haven’t already, take steps to protect your home, which may include:

     •Clear any gutters or drains;

     •Trim any trees or shrubs that could cause damage;

     •Secure loose outdoor items (furniture, decorations, etc.); and

     •Close and secure windows and doors.

Stay Indoors: During the storm, remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel.

Do Not Drive Through Water: If you are on the road when the storm occurs, one of the most critical safety precautions is to avoid driving through flooded areas. It’s difficult to gauge the depth of standing water, and it only takes a few inches to lose control of your vehicle, or even worse, become trapped. Remember: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

Emergency Contacts: Ensure that your emergency contacts are updated and shared with family members. Check in with elderly or vulnerable neighbors to see if they require assistance.

Community Help: If you need assistance or have special needs, please reach out to local agencies or community programs that can offer support during this time.
