Concealed Handgun Permits
- You must be 21 years old or older to apply.
- You must apply in the jurisdiction (city or county) where you reside.
- These instructions are directions for completing the application.
- Upon completing the application in full, you must return it to the Circuit Court Clerk’s Office where you will attest under oath to the information hereon and pay a non-refundable fee to the Circuit Court Clerk. For more information, contact the Circuit Court Clerk's Office at 434-332-9517.
- According to §18.2-308 (G) of the Code of Virginia, the Circuit Court Judge will require proof that an applicant has demonstrated competence with a handgun. Such proof as defined below shall be attached to the completed application that you submit to the Sheriff’s Office.
Acceptable Means by Which to Demonstrate Competence With a Handgun
- Completing any hunter education or hunter safety course approved by the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries or a similar agency of another state;
- Completing any National Rifle Association firearms safety or training course;
- Completing any firearms safety or training course or class available to the general public offered by a law-enforcement agency, junior college, college, or private or public institution or organization or firearms training school utilizing instructors certified by the National Rifle Association or the Department of Criminal Justice Services;
- Completing any law-enforcement firearms safety or training course or class offered for security guards, investigators, special deputies, or any division or subdivision of law enforcement or security enforcement;
- Presenting evidence of equivalent experience with a firearm through participation in organized shooting competition or current military service or proof of an honorable discharge from any branch of the armed services;
- Obtaining or previously having held a license to carry a firearm in this Commonwealth or a locality thereof, unless such license has been revoked for cause;
- Completing any firearms training or safety course or class, including an electronic, video, or on-line course, conducted by a state-certified or National Rifle Association-certified firearms instructor;
- Completing any governmental police agency firearms training course and qualifying to carry a firearm in the course of normal police duties; or
- Completing any other firearms training which the court deems adequate.
After submitting a completed application form and paying the required fee, it will take approximately six weeks for your application to be processed.
If after a full six weeks has passed and you have not received your permit, please call the Campbell County Sheriff's Office at 434-332-9580 and ask for Lt. Tom Fairchild.
A Circuit Court Judge will approve or disapprove your permit. He may further request a personal interview with you if he has some question about your request.
If approved, the Circuit Court Clerk will issue your permit by mail, which will be valid for a period of five years unless revoked by the Circuit Court Judge.
Renewal of Permit
It shall be the permit holder’s responsibility to apply for renewal. You will not receive notice of expiration. The renewal process will consist of all steps above, excluding submission of proof of competence with a handgun. The renewal application should be submitted at least six weeks prior to expiration.
