The Campbell County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) will hold its annual luncheon on Friday, March 25, 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Waterlick Moose Lodge. This year’s theme is patriotic and is called “Hometown Heroes.” Patriotic attire is encouraged.

There is no such thing as a “tornado season.” Tornadoes can occur year-round. Virginia averages 18 tornadoes annually, and it helps to know where to go and what to do when one is about to strike. Participating in the Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 22, at 9:45 a.m., is one way to prepare, according to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and registration is now open for the drill.

The Campbell County Cooperative Extension Office will offer testing of water from a private source, such as a well, spring, and cistern, through the Virginia Household Water Quality Program. The cost is $52 per sample kit. If you choose to participate, you must attend one information session to pick up a sample kit and receive directions on how to collect samples.

On Thursday, February 11 a fire engulfed the former Dan River facility in Brookneal. The cause of the blaze, which was reported at approximately 3:30 p.m., is still under investigation by the Campbell County Fire Marshal, Randall Johnson. No injuries were reported. The building was currently under demolition when the fire occurred. At this point the fire is considered contained, but as a precaution local fire crews continue to monitor the site.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced that the bridge over Hills Creek on Route 701 in Campbell County will be closed for structure replacement from Jan. 25 through April 29.

Campbell County Registrar Karen Danos has announced that the Democratic and Republican Parties have called for Presidential primaries to be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.
