Those traveling through Rustburg on Village Highway can now catch a glimpse of some beautiful illuminated snowflakes on local power poles, just in time for the holidays. What began as a concept with the Board of Supervisors and County Administration several years ago to beautify the village during the Christmas season has become a reality - thanks to some local cost savings, volunteerism, and community collaboration. Using some year-end savings from the FY21 budget, staff approached the Board to approve electrical upgrades to local power poles, which could also be applied to future decorating efforts. Staff then researched and found seasonal décor that was durable, aesthetically-pleasing, and offered at a reduced price following the December 2021 season.

After months of planning and AEP installation of components, the County partnered with Mr. Richard Parker with Commercial Lighting, LLC, who generously donated his time and professional talent in installing the decorations, which brought another cost savings to the project.  The lighted snowflakes were hung the week of Thanksgiving and span from the intersection of Route 501 and Route 24 to the Rustburg Rescue Squad.

“We’d like to thank the Board of Supervisors, AEP, and especially Mr. Parker for helping to bring this holiday project together for local residents and visitors to enjoy,” said Frank Rogers, County Administrator. “I also commend staff for their efforts in finding a cost-efficient way to promote the cheer and joy of the season through their work and collaborations.  It is our hope that these symbols of the season will light the streets of Rustburg for many years to come.”
