[ARCHIVED] Over 250 Bags of Litter Collected In Pledge to Keep Campbell County Beautiful

Litter Update

RUSTBURG, VA - Since the kickoff of the Keep Campbell County Beautiful campaign last April, volunteers have been hard at work - and their efforts have removed 272 bags of litter from our roadways, and park properties.

Initially launched as a joint endeavor with the Commonwealth of Virginia's Keep Virginia Beautiful effort to engage and unite Virginians to improve our natural and scenic environment, the program is based upon a shared responsibility between local government, and its residents and guests to end littering, improve recycling and beautify communities in Virginia.

Since its development, two programs were created to allow for volunteerism and environmental stewardship.  These are the Give Us 5, Campbell Challenge, which encourages residents to commit to five feet, five minutes for five days to litter pick up in areas they frequent, and the Green Team Program, which supplies groups of volunteers with supplies to clean sections of the community designated as high-litter areas.

Armed with gloves and a trash bag, volunteers work with program staff to identify areas that would benefit from attention.  When the litter collection in certain areas requires a bit more assistance, Campbell County's Public Works department is contacted for to help with removal and disposal.

"Currently, we have a partnership with Liberty University CSER - Christian and Community Service program," notes Beth Worth, Program Coordinator.  "Through this partnership and the Green Team program, we've been connected with many dedicated and conscientious volunteers who all have a vested interest in maintaining the scenic environment we all enjoy.  Campbell County remains welcoming due to their efforts, which we are so grateful for."
