[ARCHIVED] Virginia Cooperative Extension Supports Community Supported Agriculture with Puckette Farms

VCE - Puckette Farms

RUSTBURG, VA - The Campbell County Extension Office is pleased to announce its partnership with a local, fourth generation farmer to offer a community supported agriculture (CSA) program to our area for the Summer 2022 season.

Puckette Farms, located in Gladys, Virginia, is a family-owned and operated century farm, which has been in the family since Puckette's great great grandfather, James Douglas, and his wife, Victoria, first purchased the 121-acre property in the early 1900's.
Coming from a multigenerational farming family, Aaron has had his hands in the dirt all of his life.
“I would farm 8 days a week if possible", shares Puckette.  "It is truly our family's passion, and it is our hope that one day, my children, and my children's children will pass on this love of agriculture to others."

The family has immersed themselves in the world of agriculture and worked with the land to raise timber, tobacco, hemp, cattle and recently completed their first produce season distributing 6,000-bushel boxes to grocery stores along the east coast.
"Through the purchase of CSA memberships, members are pledging to help cover the anticipated costs of the farm’s production," explains Darienne Montgomery, the Agriculture Marketing Sustainablity Assisstant, located at the Campbell County VCE office.

"The CSA allows the farm to have working capital in the late winter and early spring when it is needed most and guarantees a market for the produce that will be grown," she adds.
"In return, members receive a portion of the farm’s crops over the period of time specified in the CSA membership agreement, usually a weekly box of produce from summer through early fall."
Memberships may be purchased online, at the rate of $360 per year (due by January 15, 2022).  The CSA fee covers produce (1/2 bushel box/20 items) for 12 weeks, to be distrbuted June through September, and will be a variety of homegrown vegetables such as: yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, acorn squash, potatoes, sweet yellow corn, onions, green beans, cucumbers, collards, bell peppers, pumpkins, and other seasonal produce may be included.
