On Tuesday, January 2, at the first Board meeting of the year, County Administrator, Frank Rogers, and newly nominated Chairman, Supervisor Eddie Gunter (Concord district), approached the podium to not only welcome three newly elected supervisors, but to recognize, and applaud a rather humble and soft-spoken gentleman that has dutifully served our locality for the past decade.
Supervisor Stan Goldsmith, who represents the Altavista district on our respective board, reached a milestone in his public service career last year, when he was recognized on November 12, 2017 by the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo).
VACo presented Mr/ Goldsmith with a certificate and service pin, to both recognize and celebrate his 10 years of service on the Board of Supervisors and to the citizens of Campbell County.
Mr. Gunter (Concord) presented the certificate and pin to his colleague and newly-appointed Vice-Chairman, who he has served with since January 1, 2008.
Ever gracious, Mr. Goldsmith shared with those in attendance how especially honored he felt to have served alongside of “some of the best people he’s ever met—true family.”
Mr. Goldsmith further expressed his gratefulness at those within the organization, who shared their sympathies during his most recent times of challenge—the illness and subsequent passing of his beloved wife, of 57 years, Helen Carter Goldsmith.
“During Helen’s illness, fellow board members, and several department heads and employees expressed their care and concern by praying for me,” noted Supervisor Goldsmith. “I have a wonderful family right here, and I am truly grateful and humbled by those sincere prayers, which helped me through some of my darkest times.”
Mr. Goldsmith’s heartfelt words were met with a standing ovation, both at his gentle and eloquent leadership as a board member, and his gracious expression of thankfulness.
Campbell County truly appreciates the decade of service and thoughtful leadership Mr. Goldsmith has so willingly imparted during his tenure, and we collectively applaud his accomplishments.
